How to Make Vinyl Stickers

June 15, 2003

Goal: Create semi-permanent visible dissent

Cost: About 13 cents per sticker

Summary: Printing stickers is a cost-effective way to create visible dissent and to recoup some of your organizational costs. This guide will show you just how easy it is to get high-quality stickers made.

Preface

Why War? is offering this guide because we think it is unethical to financially profit from the movement without telling people exactly how they can do the same. Stickers are a great fundraising opportunity for anti-war groups and if your designs are well-made this could feasibly be a very successful way of funding your actions, since stickers commonly sell for $1 (an up to 91-cent profit). However, we feel that it is important that anyone who sells stickers also tells people precisely how to make their own stickers. So we urge you to direct people to this guide when they inquire how or where you got your stickers made.

Also in this guide we are going to suggest that you use contagiousgraphics.com. We have found them to be inexpensive, quick, and very kind. We don’t receive any money from them, but they do offer benefits for referrals. If you mention in your order that you heard of them from Why War? we receive a free order of stickers. While we’d love it if you did this, it’s not necessary, nor is it necessary that you use them to have your stickers printed. If you find a better company please let us know and we will post their website address.

Design

The easiest way to create nice designs is to download interesting fonts (go onto any P2P network such as Morpheus and download Adobe Font Folio). All of the stickers that we have produced so far have been text-only because we feel this is more direct and easier to understand in a glance. It is possible to create graphic stickers but there are limitations that you will need to investigate. These limitations vary from company to company; see Contagious Graphics’ rules for one example. Basically, you need to remember that complicated designs may look terrible when converted to a sticker. We suggest that you either order some simple stickers (which they will send with samples of image heavy ones) or that you ask for a bunch of samples. The samples they will send you capture the limits of designs and may offer some good ideas.

Once you have a concept just save it to a jpg with at least 300 dpi and at the size you want the sticker to appear. If you are unsure if your design will look good on a sticker, try e-mailing it to them and they’ll let you know.

That’s It!

Well, that’s basically it. Design the sticker then upload it to Contagious Graphics and go through their ordering page. It’s really easy. Your stickers should arrive in under ten days. If you want us to post your sticker designs e-mail them to us.

Below you will find some of the stickers we have created (these are not full-size images). If you would like a full-size copy of any of these stickers let us know.
