Taliban Kill 10 Italian Soldiers in 'Vicious' Khost Airport Attack

STAFF | World News Connection | January 15, 2004

"The attack was the most vicious in the area in the last two years. In retaliation, the foreign forces also attacked the Taliban, and when US aircraft arrived the Taliban retreated."

Ten Italian soldiers have been killed as a result of an attack by the Taliban in southeastern Afghanistan.

Our correspondent reports from Khost that yesterday evening (14 January) Al-Qa'ida and Taliban forces viciously attacked Khost's old airport, where US and Italian forces are deployed.

As the Taliban were very close to the centre, mortars and BM1 rocket launchers were also used. The attack lasted for one hour.

The attack was the most vicious in the area in the last two years. In retaliation, the foreign forces also attacked the Taliban, and when US aircraft arrived the Taliban retreated.

According to the report, 10 Italian soldiers were killed in the attack. No independent source has so far confirmed the report. But our sources say that 10 Italian soldiers were killed, and one of the 20 missiles that were launched in the attack hit a mosque near Khost's old airport.

This website is a tribute to Why War?, one of the nation's first and most innovative post-9/11 student antiwar organizations. Born on October 22, 2001 at Swarthmore College, we were a handful of freshmen and sophmores who vocally opposed the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. And now, seven years later, we are retiring this website as we focus our efforts on new directions. We hope that it continues to serve future activists and we remain confident that humanity is on the verge birthing a better world.
