The 10 Worst Corporations of 2003

Russell Mokhiber & Robert Weissman | Z Magazine | April 1, 2004

"A North Canton, Ohio-based company that is one of the largest U.S. voting machine manufacturers and an aggressive peddler of its electronic voting machines, Diebold fails any reasonable test of qualifications for involvement with the voting process. Its CEO has worked as a major fundraiser for President George Bush. Computer experts revealed serious flaws in its voting technology and activists showed how careless it was with confidential information. In response, it threatened lawsuits against activists who published company documents on the Internet showing its failures." [more]

US Double Game in Haiti

Tom Reeves | Z Magazine | February 16, 2004

"The U.S. game in Haiti has always been a double game - public lip service for "democracy" - at the same time giving concrete covert aid to the most violent anti-democratic forces." In sharp disagreement with establisment media, Reeves states " Whatever Aristide's mistakes and weaknesses have been (and they are many), they pale when compared to the extreme brutality of those who are today implicated in the violence in Gonaives and elsewhere in Haiti." Haiti and the US Game

Tom Reeves | Z Magazine | March 27, 2003

What seems to be clear is that the United States government is playing the same game as in Iraq - pushing for "regime change" in Haiti. Their strategy includes a massive disinformation campaign in U.S. media, an embargo on desperately needed foreign aid to Haiti, and direct support for violent elements, including former military officers and Duvalierists, who openly seek the overthrow of President Aristide. The State of Humanity

Noam Chomsky | Z Magazine | December 28, 2002

"The struggle of people of Turkey for freedom and human rights is truly inspiring, not only because of the depth of commitment but also because it seems so natural and without pretense, just a normal part of life, despite the severe threats that are never remote." [more]

A Nightmare to Love

Jeremy Brecher | Z Magazine | December 7, 2002

"If the inspectors find some materials that might be used for weapons of mass destruction, they destroy them. The inspectors report to the Security Council; then most countries except the US and Britain declare that, whether or not Iraq once had weapons of mass destruction, it no longer does. Enforcement of sanctions begins to crumble and world pressure to lift them builds. To prevent this scenario, the Bush Administration is working frantically to discredit the inspection process." Terror and Just Response

Noam Chomsky | Z Magazine | July 2, 2002

Chomsky analyzes the moral problematic of fighting terrorism for U.S. leaders because of the less than stellar human rights records that the U.S. and its client states have. An insightful analysis of U.S. media coverage of the war on terrorism relates the U.S. political and intellectual culture to this crusade. [more]

Analysis: Central Truths

John Pilger | Z Magazine | June 30, 2002

"The study found that words such as "murder", "atrocity", "lynching" and "savage, cold-blooded killing" were used only to describe Israeli deaths. "The extent to which some journalism assumes the Israeli perspective," wrote Professor Greg Philo, "can be seen if the statements are 'reversed' and presented as Palestinian actions. [We] did not find any [news] reports stating that 'The Palestinian attacks were in retaliation for the murder of those resisting the illegal Israeli occupation'."" [more]

The War, Part II

Robert Fisk | Z Magazine | January 8, 2002

"After Arab mass-murderers crashed four hijacked aircraft into the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania, a crime against humanity which cost more than 4,000 innocent lives, President Bush announced a crusade for infinite "justice" later downgraded to infinite freedom and bombed Afghanistan. Using the gunmen and murderers of the discredited Northern Alliance to destroy the gunmen and murderers of the discredited Taliban, the Americans bombed bin Laden's cave fortresses and killed hundreds of Afghan and Arab fighters, not including the prisoners executed after the Anglo-US-Northern Alliance suppression of the Mazar prison revolt." A Look at Civilian Victims of the US Bombing

Dr. Marc W. Herold | Z Magazine | December 12, 2001

"What causes the documented high level of civilian casualties3,767 civilian deaths in eight and a half weeksin the U.S. air war upon Afghanistan? The explanation is the apparent willingness of U.S. military strategists to fire missiles into and drop bombs upon, heavily populated areas of Afghanistan." [more]

A Veil on the Truth

Cynthia Peters | Z Magazine | December 5, 2001

"A few privileged Afghan women have been caught smiling for AP cameras, but many Afghan women, men and children are silently dying behind the burqa of U.S. deceit.
The facts are simple. Massive food distribution programs put in place prior to 9-11 in response to widespread famine were derailed by the anticipation of and then the actual U.S. bombing campaign, and have been even further set back by the Taliban's retreat. According to the New York Times (11/30/01), 'In the past two weeks, the tonnage [of aid] delivered dropped to a pace less than half of what it had been in the previous two weeks.' The problem is that the 'towns and cities are so chaotic that relief agencies cannot safely operate. Many roads are off limits because of lawlessness and banditry.' " [more]
